Mutations


A mutation is when the DNA of an organism is permanently changed during replication.  

Potential Positives:
  • New adaptations to environment 
  • New DNA in gene pool 
  • Resistance to viruses or disease 
  • Necessary for evolution 
  • Variations


Potential Negatives:
  • Genetic disorders
  • Diseases
  • If gene is spread, could harm an entire population.

Examples of mutations:
  • Cancer cells
  • Sickle Cell Anemia
  • Two brown eyed parents = blue eyed child
